What does ROHS Compliant mean ?

KnowledgeMore categories
RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) refers to an EU directive that restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The directive came into force in 2003 and was later updated by the RoHS-2 directive in 2011 and the RoHS-3 directive in 2015.

When a product is designated as "RoHS compliant," it means that it meets the requirements of the RoHS Directive and does not exceed the restricted substance limits set forth in the Directive. The RoHS Directive currently restricts ten hazardous substances:

  1. Lead (Pb)
  2. Mercury (Hg)
  3. cadmium (Cd)
  4. Hexavalent chromium (Cr6 )
  5. Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
  6. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)
  7. Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
  8. Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP)
  9. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
  10. Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)

RoHS compliant products are designed and manufactured to reduce the health and environmental risks associated with these hazardous substances. RoHS compliance is important to maintain access to European Union markets, as the RoHS Directive applies to all electrical and electronic equipment sold in the EU. The RoHS Directive has also helped promote international harmonization of environmental and health standards for electrical and electronic products, as many countries have adopted similar restrictions on hazardous substances.
